Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - breed information
Character and temperament:
These dogs are said to be among the best for companionship. They are affectionate, undemanding and easy to train. Excellent with all family members and other household pets. They do not make good guard dogs as will happily greet most people warmly, however they will bark when they see strangers. They make very good traveling companions.
Origin:
These dogs were developed as far back as the 16th Century and were given their name by King Charles the Second. He made it law that King Charles Spaniels were allowed in any public place including the Houses of Parliment.
General description:
A small spaniel with a short muzzle. They have beautiful large expressive eyes. Their coat is medium length, silky and sometimes wavy. Colours vary to include red, tan, tri-colour, black and whites mixed.
Food:
Be careful not to overfeed these dogs. They have no special dietry requirements.
Exercise:
A good walk daily keeps them happy and healthy, but they can adapt to whatever amount of exercise you are able to give them,
Grooming:
Weekly grooming is recommended.
Other information:
Because of Mitral Valve disease, pups should only be bred from specimens of the breed who have shown no sign of the disease at the older age of 3 - 5 years - a bit late for some to wait to start breeding, but perhaps necessary in order to eradicate the disease from the breed.
